Insect sound classification model for Naturalis Biodiversity Center

University project for an external client, team of six

• Built a classifier that identifies insect species (459 species) from raw field audio recordings for automated biodiversity monitoring
• Implemented and compared a CNN (EfficientNet) and a spectrogram transformer (PaSST) on a learnable audio frontend; near-identical results favoured the CNN at a fraction of the compute cost
• Evaluated with macro-averaged F1 because of heavy class imbalance; classifying at genus level (196 classes) traded resolution for markedly better reliability
• Delivered timestamped, confidence-scored JSON that integrates directly with the client's ARISE platform. Worked in Scrum, two-week sprints

• Ubuntu Server on repurposed hardware, running self-hosted services in Docker containers behind an Nginx reverse proxy
• Configured it myself: SSH, UFW firewall, Fail2ban, plus DNS and SSL for my own domain
